Working for the man
Posted in Personal on September 20th, 2008The email server had been having issues. It started about 1 week ago Thursday. The server just decided that it wouldn’t work any more. I didn’t know why. The boss rebooted the server and all started working again. Friday it did the same thing. So I spent most of last weekend work on the server. Though loss of sleep I foobared it.
So Monday-Thursday we let Scalix Support have a wak at it. On Thursday they finally told me that the fastest way to get the server back up and running would be to rebuild it. So that is what I set off to do on Thursday night.
I started working right when I got home from work, which is about 6:30. I started gathering all of the information that it would take to put it all back together and building scripts that would aid in the process. Around 1 am Friday I started the backup script for all the mail and went to Waffle House with the wife.
I got back home to find out that someone had logged onto the server. This messed up the back up script. Okay, lesson learned. Turn off all connection services and restart the backup script. 4 hours later it was done. In this time I caught a nap for about 1 or 2 hours.
So I worked on getting everything done until 5 pm the following day. That was a lot of hours and time put in. You know what I got for that? A thank you. My boss really is thankful that I’m dedicated employee. I’m not dedicated to my company though. I’m dedicated to the work that I do. I know that the company can fuck me over at any time they wish. That is one thing that the job can’t do. It can make life hard, a sleep little. It really can’t just tell me to get lost like the company can.
So the server work is done. I’m done working on the server. My ability to learn on the fly and keep going and having my ass kicked by the server earlier in the week, forced me to complete this task at any cost to myself. I can’t say that there are many people that will work like that anymore. It was a personal challenge at that point. I really, really hate it when computers kick my ass. Most of the time I can find the answers. This time I was given a list of programs from the Scalix Support staff and was told what they did. Then it was my job to do the rest.
It is great when you have to tools you need to do your job. It is even better when you are able to come back for round #2 and kick ass. Even if it was a 24 hour battle.
