Jail broke G1!

Posted in Dream Android on November 20th, 2008

So those of you that know me personally know that I have already “jailbroke” my G1 phone. I got to it before the RC30 update was put on my phone. Lucky me. I’m happy it didn’t brick the phone because I don’t know how I would have been able to explain it to my wife that I now have a $200 paper weight.

So I have been looking around the directories. I have found out that /data/app/ is where the apps that you download are stored. The apps that come with the G1 are stored on /system/app/. You will have to remount /system to be RO. One of the apps that I got rid of was the Amazon MP3 app. I had no use for this at all. I don’t think that I will be buying MP3s from Amazon. So Google/T-Mobile/Amazon will not be getting kick back from each other from me.

The other apps that are in there are needed. Well you might not need the AlarmClock.apk, but I didn’t really want to get rid of it as I will use it. So, unless you really don’t want a browser, or caculator, then you could get rid of them. I am just not going to.

That is about all I have learned about the device with out reading something that someone else has done. I am sure that there is more to come with what I have yet to plan to do with the phone. Something that I would like to see accomplished with the phones? I would like to see a beowulf cluster. Some where around 300 or more phones all working together. I think that would be a really neat project for the phones.

I guess if you are geeky enough and do not have the t-mobile RC30 update, and you wish to “jailbreak” your phone. Head over to xda-developers and follow the directions. I’m not responsible for you bricking your phone. If you don’t understand it, don’t do it. It would be pointless for you.
