Sunday’s Adventure
Posted in Personal on August 18th, 2008Sunday started off early for me. I’m normally in bed until about 12 or 1. It is my day to rest. Some friends of mine invited us up to a park with them to go walking and swim in the river. The wife wasn’t feeling well so she opted to go back home after hanging out at the house for a little while before we left.
When we got to the park, it was around 1 or so. I don’t remember, mainly because I didn’t really have to worry about time. The park that we were at was an old golf course. It had become a state park from some reason. The club house buildings were falling a part and the golf cart trails were being taken over by weeds, grass, and trees. There is one thing that you can say about nature. Over time it will take what humans have made and completely destroy it. Some people say that it would take about 5 years of no one being in NY city for nature to reclaim it, and about 15 years before it started crumbling under itself.
Be that as it may, we had a great time. We went straight to the river. Headed down a field that was over grown and made out own path to the river. We were headed to the place that my friends had been to before, just took a different route.
When we got to the river we saw a water moccasin. It was swimming down stream so we decided to go up stream. I know swimming with snakes is not the smartest thing to do and most people would have not gotten in the water after seeing the snake in the first place.
The river was cold. It was great. The sun had been beating down on us for the 30 minutes it took to get to the river. We stated swimming up stream, walking on the sand bars and rocks. About half the journey up we saw a doe. It was very beautiful. You don’t get to see thing like that in the city unless you go to the zoo.
We hung around for a while sifting though the riverbed’s rocks. Plenty of quartz and other stones. There was also fools gold, and mica, that make the riverbed sparkle. It was fun just finding the different types of rocks. None of the mica or fools gold was big enough to keep.
We swam back down the river after a period of time and went hiking though other trails. This gave us all time to dry off.
It was a good time had by all. It was a good day to get out in to the woods. Getting back to the city sucked. I really don’t like the city, and after a few hours in the woods, and with nature, the city is very unnatural, and I felt very disoriented and out of place.
