What a week
Posted in Personal on February 3rd, 2008On Wednesday when I got home from work my wife was feeling no better. She also couldn’t eat and she was really starting to get sick. We don’t have insurance so I did the only thing that was let to do and that was to take her the the ER. I really think that if I had not said something she would have. In fact she told me that she was under 100 lbs., and I really think that was the straw so to speak.
They rushed her back into the ER. Her heart rate was 147 beats per minute. They said that was extremely high for being in a rest state. After some time in the ER they admitted her and sent her to ICU. That is where I spent the night.
Later on the next day a Dr. came in and told us about her thyroid and diabetes. They said that she had an enlarged thyroid. It was producing to many hormones and that it was causing her elevated heart rate. So they proceeded to give her thyroid medication to lower the production of TCH, as well as a steroid to slow her heart rate and insulin for the high blood sugar. Let it also be known that the steroid for the heart produced high blood sugar as well.
She spent the day getting test done and getting needled. Later that day we find out that she has a growth on her thyroid and that to be able to run the test for cancer she will have to come off of the medication for 1 week or have a biopsy done. We have chosen to go with the biopsy.
She was also moved to a simi-privet room, to which they would not let me spend the night with her in the room. I slept down stairs in the surgical waiting room on a bench. I would say one of the worst nights of sleep that I have ever gotten.
That night they told her that her heart acted up and they needed to run some more test. The theory was that the excessive heart rate could have caused damage to her heart. After a cardiogram and some more blood the results came back negative. This was such a relief.
She got released on Saturday around 8pm. I have a lot of running around to do today when I wake up. I have to get all of the prescriptions filled. I have to run around to several places to find the cheapest medications I can. The hospital is going to pay for about 2 weeks worth of insulin. I think the medication for the thyroid can be gotten at Wal-mart on the $4 plan. I don’t know about any of the other medications though. I think some of it will be a potassium and magnesium pill, these were also deficient.
All in all I’m happy that we know more about why she was loosing so much weight. I am really not looking forward to the bill. We don’t have insurance. Oh well. At least the wife is on the road to recovery.
