Screen Zombies
Technorati Tags: computer screen, information, junkies, mankind, mobile devices, zombiesI spend many many hours in front of a computer screen. I would say that it is more than the average person.
How is that?
Well for one I’m an IT person. That means from the time that I get to work until the time that I go home I’m in front of a screen. Now when I get home I have all of the personal things that I would like to get done on the computer as well. Like working on this blog.
Now it is true that I do work on my blog during the day at work. It is done mostly on breaks or when I’m waiting for an installation or update to complete so that I can continue working. So don’t think that I just sit here and do nothing all day long but work on my crappy blog that only entertains a few people, if that.
Back on topic though. So from about 7:30 am until about 5:30 pm, and then from 6:30pm until about 2:00 am. This is mostly on the computer doing something: reading, writing, listening to music, watching movies, or even programing or doing more work.
I have had people ask me how i can work on a computer so long or even look at the screen. Well at home I get to do what I want to do, not what someone else wants me to do. Also they do not realize that they do the same thing when they go home and watch TV all night long.
We are a generation of Screen Zombies. iTouch, iPod, iPhone, Zune, cell phones, TV, watches that play mp4 videos. Advertisements are all over the place now in digital signs and other such forms. Screens are what we humans now look to for information. We are in-put and out-put junkies. Feeding and devouring information at a rapid rate never seen before in the history of mankind.

I had someone ask me how I could look at a computer screen so many hours a day. I said it was no big deal, you get used to it. I’m 34 now-and I’m re-thinking why the heck I would stay up all night on the PC go to work the next day and let the cycle go on. Now I have to hold the newspaper 3ft in front of me to read it. ;)

Beth: You should ask yourself if you would still be holding the news paper 3 ft away if you had not stared at screens for so long. My dad has to wear glasses and he has not stared at screens as long as you or I.
It could be just getting older. It also could be from reading the news paper. I was listening to a podcast and it was talking about the accessibility options in computer for the seeing impaired or the blind. One thing that was mentioned is the white background with back text is hard for some people to read. If that is really the case then we should stop reading the news paper because it is truly bad on the eyes, as well as the text is not adjustable in size and over time we will have to strian to see it.
Who knows, I don’t trust doctors much at all.

Mike: I don’t seem to get much sleep but on the weekend. I still seem to stay up late on Friday and Saturday night, I just sleep in until about noon on Saturday and Sunday.
